STREETS DEPARTMENT RESCHEDULES MAINTENANCE WORK ON MARTIN LUTHER KING DRIVE - Temporary closures

PHILADELPHIA – Martin Luther King Drive between the Art Museum Circle and Sweetbrier Drive will be closed to all traffic through the night on Wednesday, April 12, Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams announced today.  This work was originally scheduled for tonight, but it has been rescheduled due to the forecast of rain overnight.  The following temporary restrictions are scheduled to be in effect from approximately 9:00 PM Wednesday until 5:00 AM Thursday:

  • Southbound Martin Luther King Drive traffic will be stopped at Sweetbrier Drive.  Vehicles can continue towards Center City by use of the Schuylkill Expressway (entrance on Girard Avenue) or by taking 34th Street south to Spring Garden Street.
  • Northbound traffic will be stopped at the Art Museum Circle.  Vehicles can travel north using Spring Garden Street to 33rd Street and 34th Street to Girard Avenue or by using the Kelly Drive.

This temporary closure will allow Streets Department employees to safely make repairs to the roadway and sidewalks, and to clear the drains on the bridge.  The work has been scheduled overnight in order to minimize the inconvenience to affected drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.  Police Department assistance will be on site to help maintain a safe traffic flow in the area.

All work will be completed and traffic will be restored by 5:00 AM.  The Streets Department thanks citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation during this project.
