STREETS DEPARTMENT IMPOSES WEIGHT LIMIT FOR NOBLE STREET BRIDGE

Effective Immediately

PHILADELPHIA - Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams announced today that effective immediately, the Streets Department is imposing a weight limit of three tons on the Noble Street roadway Bridge over 13th Street in Center City.  In addition, no trucks will be permitted on the bridge, regardless of their weight.

All trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles will be detoured to alternate travel routes until further notice.

The action comes after routine inspection of the bridge found signs of aging in the 100-year old structure.  The restrictions are being imposed in order to reduce the wear and tear of trucks crossing the structure and extend its useful life.

The truck ban on the bridge does not apply to smaller pickup trucks with a gross vehicle weight under three tons, or 6,000 pounds, or SUVs.  Standard passenger vehicles weigh approximately one ton.
