STREETS DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES WORK TO BEGIN FOR THE S. AMERICAN STREET – HISTORIC STREET

Philadelphia – Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams announced today that work will begin for the reconstruction of American Street from Delancey Street to Spruce Street on Monday, April 10.  This work was originally scheduled to begin the week of April 3, but due to last week’s inclement weather it was postponed.

This project involves the reconstruction of the historic granite roadway of the 300 block of S. American Street, upgrade of ADA curb ramps, resetting of granite pavers, including sub-base, resetting curb & sidewalk restoration and adjustment/resetting of manhole castings & sewer inlets.  Water Department work includes lining and restoration of the existing sewer main, inlet installation, and new service connections to the existing sewer. A detour will begin on Delancey Street from 3rd Street heading east.

  • Signage will direct traffic to make a left onto northbound Front Street and another left on westbound Spruce Street.
  • The detour along Spruce Street will end at the intersection of American Street

Construction is expected to be completed by fall of 2017.  The amount of the construction contract is $654,960.00, and it is being funded with 100% City Capital Budget funds.

The Streets Department thanks the citizens for their efforts and involvement during the design phase of this project.  It also thanks citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation during the upcoming construction phase.
