CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN ON THE SOUTH BROAD STREET PEDESTRIAN SAFETY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

PHILADELPHIA – Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams announced today that construction for the South Broad Street Pedestrian Safety Improvement Project is expected to begin the week of August 21. This project will affect Broad Street from Chestnut Street to Walnut Street.

The project includes fully reconstructing intersections on Broad Street at Chestnut and Walnut Streets by raising the roadway surface and crosswalks to the same elevation as the adjacent sidewalk. The curb and sidewalk at these intersections will also be replaced, and LED street light heads will be installed along this section of Broad Street. Additionally, the ADA ramps at Sansom and Moravian Streets will be upgraded.

Work will be done in multiple phases in order to maintain all modes of traffic through the intersections as well as to maintain access to businesses during construction. It is being performed by Ramos and Associates, Inc. of Philadelphia.  Construction is expected to be completed by spring of 2018. The construction contract is $2.9 million, and it is being financed with 100% City ARLE funding.

The Streets Department thanks the citizens for their efforts and involvement during the design phase of this project. It also thanks citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation during the upcoming construction phase.
