Temporary Overnight Closure of Pennsylvania Avenue at 29th Street - Thursday, August 24th

STREETS DEPARTMENT SCHEDULES MAINTENANCE WORK ON PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE AT 29TH STREET

Temporary closure scheduled overnight Thursday, August 24th

 

PHILADELPHIA – Pennsylvania Avenue, at 29th Street, will close temporarily today, August 24th, announced Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams. The complete closure of Pennsylvania Avenue at 29th Street goes into effect at 7:00 p.m. this evening and remains until 4:00 a.m. Friday, August 25th.  Scheduled maintenance conducted weather-permitting. 

 

Parking restrictions will be enforced throughout the duration of the project and pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be impacted by this closure. All modes of transportation traveling eastbound along Pennsylvania Avenue will be redirected to North 29th Street, over to Poplar, then East to 28th Street to continue South on 28th Street,  with access to Pennsylvania Avenue. Westbound travelers will be rerouted at 27th Street, to travel North to Poplar and turn West on Poplar.  Southbound traffic on 29th Street will be blocked at Poplar Street.  Suggested rerouting includes turning East on Poplar Street, then South on 28th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue. 

 

SEPTA service will not be impacted, as buses will be permitted through the closure to minimize the disruption to mass transit. Detour signage will not be posted for this short-term closure.

 

The temporary closure will allow City employees to do maintenance on the 29th Street Footbridge, which crosses Pennsylvania Avenue.  This work has been scheduled for evening hours in order to expedite repairs and to minimize the disruption to motorists. 

 

All work will be completed and traffic will be restored prior to morning “Rush Hour”.  For the duration of the work, Streets Department crews will make every effort to minimize the inconvenience to affected drivers, residents, and businesses.  The Streets Department thanks residents and visitors in advance for their patience and cooperation during this project.

PHILADELPHIA, PA (March 25, 2017): The Philadelphia Streets Department will kick off the 2017 cleaning season at the Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (PMBC) Annual Block Captain Rally as an opportunity for city officials to thank and recognize Block Captains for their hard work. The Rally also serves as a network where Block Captains can learn about resources that can benefit their blocks. The Rally will take place on Saturday, March 25 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and more than 1,500 Block Captains and residents are expected to attend the event, at which city officials will acknowledge their hard work in keeping their blocks and neighborhoods clean throughout the year. L&I and Streets Department Urge Precautions Against Falling Ice
PHILADELPHIA – Due to yesterday’s storm and the continuing inclement weather, including fluctuating temperatures and high winds, the Department of Licenses and Inspections and the Streets Department are advising mid-and high rise building owners and managers to monitor their building facades and ledges for ice build-up. Ice that has melted enough to break free and fall from building surfaces can pose a threat to passersby below. Building owners are advised to take precautions such as placing barricades and warning signs around potential fall zones.

Philadelphia - The City of Philadelphia has begun preparations for tomorrow night's anticipated snow event. Preparations began today with some limited brining, particularly on Roosevelt Boulevard. Crews tomorrow will convert sanitation trucks for plowing once collections are complete. Once precipitation arrives, crews will begin salting, and then switch over to plowing when accumulations are sufficient. As always, the initial focus will be on primary and secondary arteries, bridge decks and streets in higher elevations.
