PRESS RELEASE: 311 now logging abandoned bicycle removal requests, Streets Department to remove bikes over summer
Philadelphia, April 23rd – Bicycling provides affordable, healthy and environmentally friendly transportation for many thousands of Philadelphians, but over time abandoned bicycles can blight bike racks. The Philadelphia Streets Department will be conducting a clean sweep of abandoned bicycles throughout Center City and surrounding areas in early summer of 2012. To make this program as effective as possible, the City’s 311 call center will collect information on abandoned bike locations throughout the city.
Abandoned bikes are those with missing or damaged parts, that are in unusable condition and that have been locked in the same location for one month or more. Callers to 311 will be asked to provide information on the location of the bicycle and distinguishing details. Bicycles that have been abandoned for more than one month will be tagged for removal by City forces one week before scheduled removal to allow owners a chance to remove their property. Abandoned bicycle cleanups will occur on a bi-annual basis and removed bicycles will be donated to local charities for refurbishment.
