PRESS RELEASE: STREETS DEPARTMENT SCHEDULES MAINTENANCE WORK ON PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE AT 29th STREET

PHILADELPHIA – Pennsylvania Avenue at 29th Street will be closed temporarily on Saturday, May 5, Streets Commissioner Clarena I. W. Tolson announced today. The following temporary full-closure is scheduled to be in effect from approximately 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday:

  • Parking restrictions will be enforced throughout the duration of the project.
  • No pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be allowed during the closure.
  • No detour will be posted for this short-term closure.
  • Recommended detours are as follows:
  • Eastbound traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue will be sent North on 29th Street, up to Poplar, then East to 28th Street, and then South on 28th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue.
  • Westbound traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue will be blocked at 27th Street. Follow 27th Street North to Poplar Street and then turn West on Poplar.
  • Southbound traffic on 29th Street will be blocked at Poplar Street. Turn East on Poplar Street, then South on 28th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue.
  • SEPTA service will be detoured with changes in schedules and pick-up/drop-off locations.


  • The temporary closure will allow City employees to do maintenance on the 29th Street Footbridge, which crosses Pennsylvania Avenue. This work has been scheduled for weekend hours in order to expedite repairs and minimize disruption to motorists.

    All work will be completed and traffic will be restored by 5:00 PM. For the duration of the work, Streets Department crews will make every effort to minimize the inconvenience to affected drivers, residents, and businesses. The Streets Department thanks citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation during this project.

    STREETS DEPARTMENT REOPENS 15TH STREET BRIDGE
    WEDNESDAY, MAY 15

    Vehicle Weight Restriction Established

    PHILADELPHIA - The 15th Street Bridge between Callowhill and Spring Garden Streets opened to vehicular traffic today, with a "three-ton, no trucks or bus weight restrictions," Streets Commissioner David J. Perri announced today. All trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles are required to detour to alternate travel routes for the entire length of the bridge.

    The bridge was closed January 2013 due to severe deterioration to a section of the bridge. The Streets Department's Bridge Maintenance Unit re-enforced this section to strengthen the bridge.

    The Streets Department thanks citizens for their patience and cooperation during this project.
