PRESS RELEASE: PHILADELPHIA RECYCLING REWARDS PROGRAM PROVIDES PHILADELPHIA SCHOOLS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN FUNDS THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS

Now Accepting Applications

Philadelphia – The Streets Department announces an opportunity for Philadelphia schools to earn funds. The Green Schools Program is associated with the Philadelphia Recycling Rewards Program - a partnership between the Streets Department and Recyclebank that allows residents with City-provided recycling collection to earn points for the amount they recycle and reduce trash. The Recyclebank Green Schools Program, awards environmental project grants up to $2,500 to Philadelphia schools, grades K-12. Schools accepted into the Green Schools Program earn money based on Recyclebank point donations made to their project—thereby turning a community’s green actions into funds for a local school.

Schools accepted into the program must encourage teachers, parents, friends and community members to donate their Recycling Rewards points to raise the amount of points needed to meet the grant goal. The 2012-13 grant application is live and ready for download at www.Recyclebank.com/aboutgreenschools. The application period closes December 3, 2012.

The program is designed to empower youth to become green heroes and make a positive green impact in their communities. Schools can create their own innovative Green Plans from one of five categories:

• Land Beautification and Cultivation • Recycling Education and Practice • Natural Resource Preservation and Management • Eco-conscious Food Supply and Waste Management • Other (create a new and innovative eco-conscious program)

*Recyclebank reserves the right at any time during the program to change or modify the value per point for the Green Schools Program.

15th STREET BRIDGE BETWEEN CALLOWHILL
AND SPRING GARDEN STREETS CLOSURE

Effective Wednesday, January 16

PHILADELPHIA - Effective Wednesday, January 16, the 15th Street Bridge between Callowhill and Spring Garden Streets will be closed to vehicular traffic, Streets Commissioner Clarena I. W. Tolson announced today. The closure is necessary in response to a routine inspection that found structural damage to the bridge.

The closure is effective for the entire length of the bridge and will be closed to vehicular traffic until further notice, however, pedestrians and bicycles will be permitted to cross. The posted detour route includes Broad Street from Spring Garden Street to Callowill Street.

The Streets Department regrets any inconvenience resulting from this closure. We would like to thank citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation. It is our goal to have the bridge opened as soon as possible.
